Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a chronic inflammatory medical condition, occurring usually after long-term asbestos exposure, which causes scarring of the lung tissue. The signs and symptoms of asbestosis, like those of mesothelioma, usually don't appear until years after exposure. However, once apparent, the condition often worsens and can lead to permanent disability and even wrongful death if exposure to asbestos continues.

At the Locks Law Firm, our Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey asbestos attorneys have been instrumental in the development of highly effective asbestos litigation tactics and strategies. Our personal injury lawyers have won millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements on behalf of our clients. Representing clients throughout the tri-state area, our asbestos attorneys can help you and your family obtain compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Contact the Locks Law Firm and schedule a free consultation and case review today.

What is asbestosis?

Asbestosis is a chronic inflammation of the lungs that is linked to the inhalation of asbestos fibers. It causes scarring of the lung tissue and may lead to other, more dangerous asbestos-related diseases later in life. Most people with asbestosis acquired it as the result of long-term exposure to asbestos fibers in the workplace. Though asbestos use is now strictly regulated, experts estimate that since the 1940s, up to 10 million people have been exposed to the dangerous mineral. Due to the long latency period of asbestosis, people exposed decades ago are only now being diagnosed with the disease. It's not uncommon for victims of asbestosis to be first diagnosed with the disease 15 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos fibers.

If you or a family member has been diagnosed with asbestosis, you are the victim of a dangerous product and have rights. Contact the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York asbestos attorneys at the Locks Law Firm to schedule a complimentary case evaluation. We help our clients establish liability and attain financial compensation for medical bills, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more. We will help you and your family to obtain the justice you deserve.

Asbestosis Causes

Asbestosis victims may have been exposed to the dangerous carcinogen at work, in their community, or at home. Construction workers and those with other asbestos-related jobs are particularly vulnerable. Additionally, many people are exposed as a result of the manufacturing or handling of asbestos products.

Asbestosis and other asbestos-related diseases have also manifested in individuals without occupational exposure but who live close to asbestos mines or have been exposed to fibers carried home by family members working with asbestos.

Asbestos hazards may also be found in the home:

  • Houses built between 1930 and the 1970s may have asbestos as insulation.
  • Some roofing and siding shingles are made of asbestos-containing materials.
  • Asbestos may be present in paint and in patching compounds used prior to 1977.
  • Pipes in older homes may be coated with an asbestos material.
  • Asbestos is found in some vinyl floor tiles.
  • Oil and coal furnaces may have asbestos insulation.
  • Older products (such as stove-top pads) may have some asbestos compounds.

Contact the New York, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey asbestos attorneys at Locks Law Firm if you have been recently diagnosed with asbestosis, mesothelioma, or another asbestos-related condition.
