Accutane Linked with Significantly Increased Risk of Birth Defects, Gastrointestinal Disorders, and Mental Health Disorders

Accutane is a drug prescribed to treat severe acne by reducing the amount of oil released by oil glands and helping skin to renew itself. Accutane was first manufactured and distributed by Hoffman-LaRoche in 1982, and had annual sales of more than $1.2 billion before it was removed from the market in 2009. If you or a loved one has taken Accutane and has suffered from a complication or serious side effect, contact the Accutane attorneys, serving Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York areas.

About Accutane

Accutane, manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals, is a dangerous pharmaceutical that has been linked to issues related to pregnancy and severe birth defects, mental health disorders, and gastrointestinal disorders.

The Locks Law Firm is currently reviewing cases on behalf of individuals and their family members who have suffered from Accutane-related pregnancy issues, mental health diagnoses, and gastrointestinal disorders.

Accutane Lawsuits

Thousands of Accutane lawsuits have been filed in the United States, including in the State of New Jersey where many of the cases are consolidated in multidistrict litigation.

In 2001, the New England Journal of Medicine linked Accutane to depression. Between 1982 and 2000, the Food and Drug Administration received 431 reports of depression, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, or suicide in U.S. patients treated with Accutane. The article concluded that Accutane ranks among the top 10 drugs in the FDA’s database related to reports of depression and suicide attempts among its users.

A 2007 study in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology examined women who became pregnant while taking Accutane. The study tragically revealed that only nine pregnant women out of ninety had a live birth. Seventy-six women had elective abortions due to the risk of serious birth defects associated with the drug, two had trauma during delivery, and three experienced spontaneous abortions.

At a 2009 meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in San Diego, a research team presented the results of a study that showed that Accutane users were 1.7 times more likely to develop Inflammatory Bowel Disease than the general population, and those who filled at least four Accutane prescriptions were 2.67 times more likely to contract the disease.
