Steven P. Knowlton, Partner
Background and Experience
Steven P. Knowlton is a partner in the New York and New Jersey offices of the Locks Law Firm. As a former intensive care and emergency room nurse, Mr. Knowlton brings particular expertise to the areas of pharmaceutical, product liability, toxic exposure, and medical malpractice litigation, providing experienced representation in both the individual plaintiff and class action settings.
Mr. Knowlton was part of the trial team in the Vadino v. American Home Products diet drug class action proceedings in New Jersey. He also served as counsel on the only silicone breast implant case to reach the trial stage in that state, and was a member of the trial team in Doherty v. Merck (Vioxx). Mr. Knowlton has served on multiple mass-tort steering committees.
Mr. Knowlton lectures frequently to physicians and allied health care providers on medicolegal issues and has authored a book chapter on legal issues in long-term care. He has training in Grief Counseling and a deep interest in end-of-life care issues. Additionally, Mr. Knowlton is a speaker and presenter at numerous bar and professional association functions.
Mr. Knowlton’s pro bono activities include 10 years serving as Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals of the Village of Nyack, Special Counsel for the Village of Nyack,as well as chairing other land-use committees. He also served as Deputy Mayor of the Village and has recently returned to the Zoning Board as Chairman, and is a member of the Land Use Technical Committee.
Mr. Knowlton is active in preservation and land access issues through The Access Fund, the Mohonk Preserve and other environmental organizations. He is also a cyclist, rock climber and alpine mountaineer.
Outside the Office
Steve's pre-legal professions (carpenter, construction worker and ICU/ER nurse) add dimension to his analysis of his client's cases. He is an avid outdoorsman and cyclist, participating in rock climbing, alpine mountaineering (with attempts on Rainier and other peaks) and long distance cycling events and races. Steve also has a wide knowledge of the history of the US Virgin Islands and finds joy and solace hiking the islands' trails and snorkeling and swimming their pristine waters.
