MR. GENE LOCKS: As a leader I’ve, in the early ‘70s, negotiated the first group legal service plans that provided inexpensive legal services to members of Trade Unions and others and these were paid for by the employer. I was the leader and the first person who successfully tried asbestos, meselthelioma-related cases to verdict in the United States. After one early decision many years before the defendants had been very successful in winning these cases and denying justice to those victims. Asbestos became the first mass tort in the United States. I then got involved in the second mass tort in the United States was toxic substances called Agent Orange, which our soldiers in Vietnam were exposed to. Even though some of the innovative creative solutions that we came up with were not totally endorsed at that time, they have become the guidelines for the manner in which asbestos cases are now handled by the System. I became a leader, again, by participating and negotiating the first national medical monitoring case in the United States, which was in the diet drug litigation where a Class Action treatment on a national level was done. I am a leader now of a team of lawyers who have been trained to follow my guidelines in their practice. The men and women who work with me, and in some instances for me, only work for working people, continue to work for working people, have been trained by me to do that. It’s a team effort and our team is experienced, known and respected by lawyers, by our clients and by the Judicial System. We obtain justice for all just the way I did when I started almost 50 years ago.
