Recreational products, such as trampolines, can cause serious injuries.

MS. STEFANIE EBERT: An astonishing amount of serious injuries occur in the home and during recreational activity. Around the home you see mostly slip and falls, or trip and falls due to poorly-maintained sidewalks or flooring. Now those can be prevented if the homeowner takes care of their sidewalks or flooring. We're seeing more and more injuries occur, serious injuries occur because of recreational activities. Some of the most common serious injuries during recreation that occur involve backyard swimming pools, backyard trampolines. We're seeing more and more injuries from wave runners and jet skis. Also we're seeing a lot of playground injuries. The Consumer Products Safety Commission tracks emergency room visits and the causes for those emergency room visits. Over the past ten years emergency room visits from serious injuries due to accidents that occurred on backyard trampolines has more than doubled. Most recently we've seen an increase in injuries form jet ski and wave runner accidents. Now these types of injuries could have been prevented if people are trained better on how to operate jet skis and wave runners, or the manufacturers could produce a better product that's safer for the person who's engaging in this type of recreation. Also playground injuries can be some of the most traumatic. Over a third of the injuries that occur on playgrounds involve a serious bone break, a dislocation, concussions, and even amputations.
