MirenaⓇ Linked with Significantly Increased Risk of Serious Medical Complications
MirenaⓇ is an intrauterine device (IUD) intended to prevent pregnancy for up to five years by emitting hormones after implementation. The Mirena IUD has been in use in Europe since 1992 and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 for use in the United States. In 2009, the FDA expanded Mirena’s approval to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in women already using an IUD.
Mirena, manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, was represented to be safe and effective for preventing pregnancy, but instead the device has been linked to serious complications, such as spontaneous device migration and uterine perforations. If you or a loved one has used a Mirena IUD and suffered from serious complications, contact the Mirena attorneys, serving Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York areas.
Mirena, manufactured by Bayer, is a dangerous device that has been linked to spontaneous device migration, uterine perforations, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy where the embryo does not implant in the uterus), certain cancers, and brain injuries.
The Locks Law Firm is currently reviewing cases on behalf of women and their family members who have suffered from injuries caused by Mirena.
Nearly 2,500 Mirena lawsuits have been filed in both state and federal courts in New York and New Jersey. There are currently more than 1,121 cases centralized in multidistrict litigation underway in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. In New Jersey, there are more than 1,375 cases consolidated in state proceedings. (In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434; In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297).
Many of the Plaintiffs in these lawsuits accuse Bayer of failing to adequately warn about the device’s potential to spontaneously migrate away from the uterine wall and into other parts of the body. The complaints further allege that Bayer misrepresented the benefits of Mirena, concealed the harmful side effects of Mirena, knowingly sold a defectively designed product, engaged in deceptive marketing, breached warranties to consumers, engaged in fraud, and understated the product’s complications as “uncommon.”
In studies, Mirena has been proven to migrate to the pelvis where it is difficult to find and remove. Some women have had to undergo multiple surgeries to resolve the issue, and in some cases, the damage might be permanent.
