About Zelnorm®
Developed by Novartis AG, Zelnorm®, a prescription medication used for the short-term treatment of irritable bowel syndrome in women, was approved by the FDA in July 2002. Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, can produce abdominal pain, cramping, or disruption of bowel function including gas, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. Later, the FDA approved Zelnorm® usage to treat chronic constipation in both men and women less than 65 years of age.
Zelnorm® Side Effects
On March 30, 2007, the FDA released the results of 29 Zelnorm® clinical trials, which involved more than 18,000 subjects. The studies linked Zelnorm® to a host of potentially life-threatening side effects, including angina, heart attack, and stroke. Additionally, trials uncovered cases of rectal bleeding and severe abdominal pain suggestive of intestinal ischemia which, without timely treatment, can be fatal.
