A Canadian study, published May 14, 2008 in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, found that cardiac surgery patients treated with Trasylol were much more likely to die than patients treated with other drugs. The study included over 2,300 patients. Bayer AG, the maker of Trasylol, announced on May 16, 2008 that it will remove the remaining Trasylol stock from the U.S. market. Over 200,000 patients received Trasylol in 2006, which was the peak year for sales. Cardiac surgery patients or their family members who are concerned over these findings are welcome to contact our firm.
Trasylol® was approved by the FDA in 1993 for use as a prescription drug to control bleeding during heart surgery. However, in January 2006, the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine concluded that Trasylol® increased the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure compared to other, similar drugs. An FDA Advisory Committee concluded in September 2006 that Trasylol® was safe and effective for use in certain patients, but it was later learned that Bayer had failed to disclose to the committee the results of an extensive medical study of 67,000 surgery patients, which found the drug's increased risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and death. The revelation that Bayer concealed the unfavorable study results from the FDA prompted the administration to suspend marketing of Trasylol® in November 2007, pending results of an extensive Canadian study of the drug's effects, which is currently underway.

Trasylol®, also known as aprotinin injection, was developed by Bayer and widely used on surgery patients across the nation following its FDA approval in 1993. Sales of the drug reached $135 million in the first nine months of 2007 alone and nearly five million Americans were exposed to the drug since 1993, including 110,000 in 2006. Most patients were exposed to Trasylol® during coronary bypass and open-heart surgery, but some patients may not be aware that the drug was used during their procedures. If you were treated with Trasylol® during a surgical procedure, you may have a valid legal claim against the manufacturer. Contact the Locks Law offices serving Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey to learn more about Trasylol® side effects and discuss your potential Trasylol® lawsuit.
The primary side effects of Trasylol® include serious kidney damage, heart attack and stroke. Studies of the drug have concluded that as many as 22,000 Trasylol® patients died unnecessarily because of the drug and could have been saved if Bayer had pulled the product in January 2006, when scientific articles began detailing widespread complications from its use. If you or a loved one had coronary bypass surgery or open heart surgery and have suffered kidney damage, heart damage or stroke, Trasylol® may have been given during the procedure, perhaps without the patient's knowledge.
